What is rattan garden furniture?

Most outdoor rattan furniture sold in the UK today is made from synthetic PE rattan — polyethylene woven over a powder-coated aluminium frame. This is very different from natural rattan cane, which absorbs moisture and deteriorates outdoors. PE rattan is UV-stabilised, frost-resistant and fully weatherproof. It won't crack, splinter or rot. You can leave it outside year-round in the UK without issue.

The weave is typically wound around an aluminium frame rather than steel, which means no rusting at the joints. Cushions are usually filled with high-density foam and covered in polyester or Olefin fabric — water-resistant, quick-drying and fade-resistant.

How to care for rattan garden furniture

PE rattan is low-maintenance. Wipe the weave down with warm soapy water and a soft brush to clear dirt from between the strands. Rinse with a hose. Cushions should be stored indoors or in a waterproof storage box during extended wet weather — even water-resistant covers benefit from being kept dry over winter. A furniture cover during the coldest months protects both the weave and the cushions and keeps cleaning to a minimum the following spring.

Aluminium frames don't rust, but check powder-coat joints annually for chips where bare metal could be exposed. Touch up with outdoor metal paint if needed.

What size rattan set do you need?

Measure your space before you buy. A standard 3-seater rattan sofa set with coffee table typically needs around 2.5m x 2m of clear space, not including circulation room around it. A large corner sofa set can span 2.5m x 2.5m or more. Rattan dining sets for six need roughly 2m x 1.5m for the furniture alone — add at least 1m on each side for pulling chairs out. Bistro sets for two can fit into 1m x 1m.

Indoor and outdoor use

Many rattan sets work equally well indoors and out.
